Emma G. Whiteknact Elementary School News

Posted

At Emma G. Whiteknact Elementary School in East Providence, fifth graders in Ms. Resnick's and Mr. Pimental's classes showed off their innovation and entrepreneurship skills during their Shark Tank activity. Fifth graders have been doing a lot of work with Engineering Practices. Engineering Practices promote problem solving, higher level thinking, and overall 21st century skills. Fifth graders have also been learning about inventions through their ELA curriculum. Students were placed into teams and asked to design an invention that would help other students to be better organized in school. Teams had to design a model of their invention and market it as a product that would be presented to "The Sharks". The teams had to come up with a product name, a company name, a marketing strategy, a cost analysis, a model, and a proposal for "The Sharks". Teams also had to be prepared for the tough questions that Sharks would ask during the presentation. Whiteknact's Guest Sharks included Principal Medeiros along with other staff members. Sharks definitely asked the hard questions, keeping teams on their toes! Despite how tough the Sharks were, teams won them over with their creativity, high-level thinking, and presentation skills! We may be seeing some of these innovators and entrepreneurs on the real Shark Tank someday!
