Eugene S. (Gene) Clauss 94, Riverside, died peacefully on December 20, 2022 after a brief illness at Roger Williams Hospital. His family was by his side. He was the beloved husband of the late Norma M. (Santoro) Clauss. Born Oct. 2, 1928 in Providence, a son of the late Donald H. and Hope (Sweet) Manny, he lived in East Providence for most of his life.

He is survived by his Sister Sandra M Esposito of Wantagh, New York, Sons; Eugene S Clauss and his wife Wendy of Barrington; David and his spouse Sheila Scott of Riverside; Bryan and his wife Stacey of Florida; grandsons Matthew of Marlboro, MA and Michael of Naples, FL.

After graduating from East Providence High School in 1947, he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve for 8 years.

In civilian life, he was a printer with several companies including the Providence Journal, Almacs Supermarkets and retiring from Federated Lithographers in 1993. Upon official retirement; Gene also worked part time preparing boats manufactured by TPI in Bristol, RI for initial commissioning. He also was the driver for the North East Marine Pilots transporting pilots between ships and locations.

His hobbies included watching automobile racing, both Indy type and multiple NASCAR divisions. He was an avid boater, both powerboat and sail. He was a life member of Narragansett Terrace Yacht Club serving as membership chairperson for many years. He won numerous Rhodes 19 championships. He was a long-standing member of the Rhode Island Society Sons of the American Revolution, where he became the State President 1997-2000 and the Vice President General, New England District 2003-2004. Additionally, he was affiliated with a number of other historical societies. He was a longtime member of the Freemasons, Saint Andrews Lodge 39. He was a longtime member of the West Barrington Men’s Club. He was a communicant of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Riverside.

A private funeral service will be held in the Swan Point Cemetery Redwood Chapel, Blackstone Blvd. Providence. A graveside Burial will follow. Calling Hours and Flowers are respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are invited to a gathering in Eugene’s memory at The Venue, located within the Dublin Rose Sports Pub, 940 Fall Rive Ave Seekonk, MA 02771, on January 26, 2023 at 3:00 PM.
