George J. Cluley, Sr.

George J. Cluley, Sr. 86, of Rumford, RI, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary L. (Truax) Cluley. George and Rosemary celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary on December 29th, 2022.

George was born in Pawtucket, RI, in 1936 to the late Exzelia (Breault) Cluley and George J. Cluley.

George grew up in Pawtucket and graduated from Pawtucket East High School in 1954. He subsequently attended Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and served in the United States Army. After his military service, George returned to Rhode Island and embarked on a career in graphic arts and was a member of the Graphic Arts Union for forty years.

Upon his retirement George embraced his many hobbies with passion. He volunteered at the former Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket and worked as a ground’s keeper at the Agawam Hunt Country Club in Rumford. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. In 1970, he won the club championship at Lincoln Country Club and was quite proud of making three holes in one at three different golf courses. He was a life member of the Greystone Social Club, North Providence, RI where he would treat members to his homemade venison stew.

George spent summers at the family Cabin on Echo Lake in Pascoag, RI where he and his wife enjoyed precious time with their family and grandchildren on the lake during the day and by the campfire at night. He and his wife Rosemary enjoyed years of travel and extensive cruising all over the world including Europe, South America, Alaska, and the Caribbean. Most memorable for George was a trip to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Walking down Bourbon Street with all the bands and music, “The noise was unbelievable”.

George was a passionate outdoorsman. He had a personal warmth, gentle wit, and a love of life that endeared him to all who know him. He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by three children, Mary Elizabeth Barlow and her husband, David of Deland, Florida, George J. Cluley, Jr. and his wife, Annie, of Cumberland, and Kathleen M. St.Pierre and her husband, Robert, of Westport, MA; seven grandchildren, Michael St. George and his wife, Diana, Amanda Ferreira and her husband, Thomas, Jonathan St. George, Lauren Jeldres and her husband, Francisco, Stephanie Rushing (Ian Anderson), Jonathan St.Pierre and Stephen St.Pierre; six great-grandchildren, Logan Hemstreet, Maxwell Ferreira and Eli Ferreira, Noah Anderson and Ella Rose Anderson and Olivia E. Jeldres; two sisters, Alice Chalpin and her husband, Steven, and Frances Riley, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Doris Rinaldi, and his beloved Pomeranian, Angel.

Services and interment at Mount Saint Mary Cemetery in Pawtucket will be private. Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.
