The Exploration Center and Aquarium is Closed for Improvements

Posted

As of January 1, Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium in Newport is closed for the installation of a new shark-and-skate touch tank entitled “Sharks and Skates of Narragansett Bay.”

When we reopen in February 2020, guests will discover a new front-of-house touch tank housing adult and juvenile dogfish sharks, catsharks and skates. The new exhibit will be installed at ground level, increasing accessibility and allowing more guests the opportunity to interact with sharks and skates at the same time.

The “Sharks and Skates of Narragansett Bay" exhibit is part of a larger Shark and Skate Conservation Education Initiative made possible in part by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust. Guests can also look forward to examining unfertilized "mermaid's purses," or egg cases, before observing developing sharks and skates in special backlit tanks; learning about shark and skate adaptations and behavior; visiting predator-and-prey exhibits; and engaging with non-living artifacts, including shark jaws and teeth.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium will reopen February 2020.

Stay tuned for more details and a grand reopening date!
