Bay View Academy Crew Enjoys Strong Fall Season UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP

East Providence, RI – Bay View Academy continues to enjoy a robust, three season rowing program, which has sent rowers on to such collegiate programs as the University of Notre Dame, University of Connecticut and the University of Louisville. This year, the team continues to grow, adding 13 new rowers, under the direction of a new coach: Brent Basso. Basso (East Greenwich, RI), a protege of former Bay View and Brown University crew coach, Albin Moser, began his coaching career at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence and went on to become the Novice coach at Bryant University in Smithfield. He has also coached for a nonprofit in New York City and continues to train and race in the single sculls out of the Narragansett Boat Club.

The Bay View Crew began preparing with Basso in late August for the fall season, working out in Bay View’s Athletic Wellness Center on the ergometers and rowing out of the Narragansett Boat Club. The varsity and novice eights competed in three regattas this season. At the Textile River Regatta (Lowell, MA) on the first weekend of October, Bay View’s varsity eight placed 9th out of a pool of 50 boats. The following weekend they placed 5th at the New England Championships (Worcester, MA), facing many of the same crews and improving on last year’s 6th place seed. The final race of Bay View’s fall season was the Head of the Schuylkill, which draws national level teams from the entire Northeast and central east coast. Varsity placed 17th of 47, while our novice (freshman) team placed 10th in their event of 30 crews.

Bay View also secured a spot at the internationally respected Head of the Charles Regatta (Cambridge, MA), competing in the women’s youth fours on October 19th, taking 62nd place among a field of top teams from across the nation. The rowing team is now enjoying a brief break before resuming training on the ergometers this winter to prepare for a competitive spring season.
