Camp Invention Encourages Creativity, Problem Solving Through STEM Learning

Posted

East Providence, RI – June 27-July 1 – Camp Invention, the nation’s premier summer enrichment day camp program, supported by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and a product of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), was hosted in East Providence during the last week of June.

For students entering grades one through six, Camp Invention is a weeklong adventure that will turn the summer from ordinary to extraordinary through hands-on problem solving, using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Camp Invention provides an opportunity for inventive young minds to exercise their creativity and use their imagination in ways they don’t normally get to in the classroom. Program participants do not realize they are learning and developing new skills as they build prototypes, take things apart, explore different types of technology and so much more.

This year’s Camp Invention curriculum is called Epic™, inspired by some of our nation’s most brilliant minds including experienced educators, Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and developed in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Epic™ features hands-on modules like CrickoBot™, where Campers construct and personalize a DIY solar-powered cricket and a unique habitat; Epic Park ™, where Campers work in teams to design an eco-adventure park; I Can Invent: Maker Studio™, where Campers brainstorm product ideas and build original prototypes using real tools and components found in everyday devices; and The Lab: Where Pigs Fly™, where children can discover the science of slime, demolition, electronic sound, giant squid and coding.

Local programs are facilitated and taught by educators who reside and teach in the community. Camp Invention serves more than 94,000 students every year through nearly 1,400camps across the nation. For additional information or to find the nearest location for registration, visit www.campinvention.org.

East Providence was very fortunate as a local company, Nordson Corporation funded this week for 70 elementary school students to experience Camp Invention for free! East Providence elementary school teachers were trained and ran Camp Invention at Martin Middle School.

East Providence Camp Invention Staff:
Director: Amy Resnick
Assistant Director: Nelia Milhomens
Instructors: Emily Rendine, Kaitlyn Moynihan, Jen Clark, Karen Mangone

A brief description of each of the modules for Camp Invention:

CrickoBotTM
In CrickoBot, inventors make and adopt their very own DIY robotic cricket powered by the sun! Inventors create cricket-inspired inventions and outsmart motorized spider predators, build cricket-sized tire swings and trampolines and explore the science of sound by investigating how crickets chirp. Friends challenge one another to a Chirp-Off, where they play their musical instrument inventions.
CrickoBot merges STEM concepts and real-world challenges as inventors explore biology and use their own ideas to create new insect-inspired innovations.

Epic ParkTM
Inventors gear up and design zip lines, water flumes and hi-tech eco-gear! Ed Venture and Angel Investor need their help to develop the latest and greatest tourist attraction because the dynamic duo just purchased Epic Park, located on a beautiful island filled with rainforest areas, waterfalls, sandy desert stretches, steep cliffs and rolling hills that all lead down to the ocean. Angel and Ed—who happen to be crazy about all things adventurous—are looking for innovative thinkers to team up and pitch their most cutting-edge designs for the future of Epic Park.
Inventors sketch up their best blueprints and clean green energy designs that will win over Angel and Ed for the chance to be Epic Park co-owners and operators all while exploring principles of entrepreneurship and physics.
I Can Invent: Maker StudioTM
Inventors repower the motors, gears, lights, fans and components found in broken machines to make their own innovations in the Maker Studio!
If inspiration is needed, inventors can spin the Inventor Challenge Wheel to hear a video challenge from National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees and Collegiate Inventors Competition Finalists and Winners.
The Lab: Where Pigs FlyTM
Inventors explore demolitions, coding, squid, slime and sound-activated lights in The Lab: Where Pigs Fly and anything is possible!
Inventors see themselves as scientists, programmers and biologists testing out more than one dozen experiments in the Camp Invention Laboratories. Every day there are exciting new challenges; from demolition and cup tower explosions, to programming and coding, to the chemistry of polymer slime and spinning disco ball circuits. Investigation and discovery are the key ingredients to fun in the ever-changing Lab: Where Pigs Fly and anything is possible!

About Camp Invention
Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized summer program focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention. Through hands-on programming, Camp Invention encourages children in grades 1-6 to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics curriculum inspired by some the world’s great inventors. Camp Invention, the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the Collegiate Inventors Competition serve as the authority on inspiring invention and compose Invent Now. This nationwide organization is committed to the curious minds and innovative spirits of the past, present and future. Since 1990, our education programs have served over 1 MILLION children and 125,000 teachers and Leadership Interns.
