Celebrate the Splendor of Autumn the Audubon Way! October Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

(September 1, 2015) – Throw on your fleece jacket, grab your binoculars, and hit the trails in search of fall migrants. C’mon out to your local wildlife refuge and celebrate the splendor of autumn the Audubon way!

October 2 - 4, 2015 Block Island Birding Weekend
Block Island, RI
Join Audubon for a weekend of unsurpassed fall birding. Block Island in autumn becomes the resting place for thousands of migrating birds. More than 150 species of birds have been seen here on fall weekends! Field trips for both novice and advanced birders led by experts are featured. Special programs include salt marsh field trips, bird banding demonstrations, and more. Cost of the weekend includes ferry fares, hotel accommodations, meals and programs. Space is limited so please register early.

October 3, 2015 Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day
Audubon Environmental Education Center
Bristol, RI 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Admission to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center will be free on the first Saturday of every month, courtesy of a grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation.

Families can explore environmental exhibits representing Rhode Island’s diverse habitats, from upland meadow and cornfields to wetlands, salt marshes and the Narragansett Bay shoreline.
Situated on the beautiful 28-acre McIntosh Wildlife Refuge, visitors can enjoy nature trails.

Come find a treasure at the Audubon Used Nature Book Sale. Find something special for the nature enthusiast on your holiday shopping list or maybe a treat for yourself!

• 11:00 am to 12:00 pm: Book Making with Recycled Materials - Learn how to create your own book! Kids will use a variety of recycled materials and art supplies to create their own unique hand-bound book. Write a story, keep a nature journal, or sketch your own illustrations!

Audubon offers FREE Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with naturalist Laura Carberry through the end of January 2016. Walks will begin at 9:00 am. Each week a new birding destination will be chosen. Create your own glass bird pendant! Benjamin Giguere of Gather Glass in Providence will guide you through the process of making a flameworked piece of glass jewelry. October 14, 2015 A Walk in the Woods:
A Glimpse at New England Forests
Prudence Island 9:45 am – 3:00 pm
Explore the beautiful forested trails of Prudence Island, from deciduous hardwood to pine barren and freshwater swamp. Education staff will guide you through the woods, sharing their knowledge of local tree species, New England forests and how land use change over hundreds of years has shaped the current landscape of Prudence Island. Walks are at a leisurely pace and will cover two to three miles. Registration is required. October 20, 2015 Diamondback Terrapins

Diamondback Terrapins are the only species of turtle in the U.S. that live in the brackish waters of salt marshes and estuaries. Here in Rhode Island, these turtles have an “endangered” status, and Barrington is the location of their principal colony. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust has been researching these one-of-a-kind turtles since 1990. Join us for a presentation on the origins of these interesting and endangered reptiles and discover what has been learned from the 26-year study of this local population. Registration required. October 23, 2015 High Peaks and Autumn Glory
Audubon Long Pond Woods Wildlife Refuge

The overlook at Long Pond is a wonderful spot to be in autumn, where soaring birds and colorful foliage surround you. This is an up-and-down vigorous hike well worth the climb to the top. Join Scott Ruhren, director of conservation, for a challenging hike on this special refuge. Come to Prudence Island and search for animal sounds, homes, tracks, and signs during this outdoor investigation! Practice using your senses to discover the many animal species that call the island their home. Learn about predator-prey interactions, animal adaptations in response to the environment and humans, invasive species, and more.

October 25, 2015 Birding Hammonasset Beach State Park and Lighthouse Point

Hammonasset Beach State Park is the premier birding site in Connecticut, with approximately 300 species spotted there. Observe migrating waterfowl, waders, shorebirds, raptors, warblers, sparrow, and buntings. If we are really lucky, we might spot Cave Swallows or even a Northern Saw-whet Owl. After spending the morning at Hammonasset Beach State Park, participants will head over to Lighthouse Point Park, one of the oldest hawkwatch sites in the US. Here we will search for accipters, falcons, buteos and eagles. Please bring a lunch and snacks, binoculars, scopes and dress for the weather. For years, the fastest animals on the planet have patrolled the Providence skyline, protecting their territory and successfully rearing over 30 chicks. Peter Green is a photographer and graphic designer living and working in downtown Providence. He walks the city, documenting the Peregrine Falcons and more urban wildlife from hawks nesting on rooftops to kestrels hunting in alleys. October 31, 2015 The Perfect Pumpkin Party

Come to Audubon for our annual day of pumpkin fun! Try your hand at pumpkin golf, pumpkin ring-toss, and pumpkin art. Join us for a different kind of fall celebration and find out just how much fun a pumpkin can be. Buy a pumpkin from our "patch" and decorate it with fun art supplies. Children in costume will receive a special prize! No need to register. Please note: some of the art activities may be messy, so wear clothes that can get dirty.
