State House — President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown) has appointed Sen. Cynthia A. Coyne (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) to serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee. She was also reappointed as a member of the Environment and Agriculture Committee, and will serve as its secretary.

“It is a tremendous honor to be given this new responsibility on the Senate Judiciary Committee,” said Senator Coyne. “I would like to thank President Paiva Weed for her trust and confidence. I look forward to the deliberations on legislation involving criminal law and the justice system.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee handles all legislation and matters which affect the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws. The committee is also responsible for advice and consent hearings for all judges appointed by the governor.

The Environment and Agriculture Committee considers all legislation and matters relating to the conservation of the air, land, water, plant, animal, mineral and other natural resources of the state.

Senator Coyne was first elected to the State Senate in November 2014.
