Hike the Mowry Conservation Area!

Posted

For this trip we will be joined by Lorén Spears, Executive Director of the Tomaquag Museum who will be teaching us about the Indigenous Peoples’ uses and knowledge of the many plants and animals in this area. We’ll walk a one-mile loop – it’s short and serene, and just so Rhode Island. There is a steep section going up to the ledge trail, so sturdy boots are suggested. The 44 acres was given to the town of Smithfield by S. Burton and Mary Mowry, who had owned the Mowry farm on that property since 1845. It features a stocked trout stream, towering hemlocks and pines, a arching footbridge, a picnic area, many stonewalls (stonework that remains from the 18th century forge and sawmill), and the remains of an old stone dam.

This hike is part of the "Explore the Woonasquatucket: Recreation Series". We follow State and Federal guidelines to ensure the safety of all participants. Pre-registration is required for all hikes and trips are capped at 10 people. Click the link for more details and to register!
