Gingerbread Houses for Kids
You can call the library at 508-252-4236 to see if there are any last-minute spaces left for the popular holiday gingerbread house afternoons on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. Dec. 14, 15, and 16 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. each day. Registration is required and only 25 houses will be available each afternoon. This program is for children ages 5 and up, though younger children may work along with an older sibling. This program is made possible by the support of the Friends of the Blanding Library. Masks must be worn in the building.

Story times for children up through age 4 will be offered on Tues. Dec. 14 and Tues. Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. Children and their parents/caregivers and older siblings are invited to come for an interactive program of movement, books, music, and more. Please register in advance. Check the library’s website for more children’s activities coming in January.

Library Holiday ToileTREE
The Blanding’s Christmas tree this year will be decorated with tags with toiletry items written on them. We are collecting these items to benefit the Rehoboth Food Pantry. Here’s how it works: stop by the library and choose a tag from the tree. Purchase the item on the tag and return the items to the donation bin for the food pantry, located right inside the door at Goff Hall. Let’s fill the bin with these much needed items.

Now through the end of the month, you can access Ancestry.com from home using your library card. Go to: https://tinyurl.com/96ubvvua at  https://ancestrylibrary.proquest.com. This is a special promotion from Ancestry.com, but this popular genealogy site will still be available in 2022 to those with a library card, courtesy of the Blanding, while conducting their research at the library. Stop by the front desk for more information.

Elf on the Shelf: The holidays approach and Elvis is back in the building!  Our Elf on the Shelf, Elvis, will be up to mischief in the library until Christmas. Stop in and see if you can find out what he’s up to.

News from the Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Blanding Library board is getting a head start on plans for 2022. Membership renewal forms were mailed to current members in November; this will cover dues through 2022. The Friends thank everyone for their prompt response.

The first program on the Friends’ calendar for next year is “At-risk Amphibians of Rehoboth” on Feb. 23, presented by Carol Entin. Looking ahead, a Friends’ book exchange is planned for March 11, a paperback book sale on May 21, with the annual used book sale scheduled for Oct. 7 and 8. More details to follow on these events.

For those not familiar with this organization, the Friends of the Library is an all-volunteer 501c(3) group which helps support the library by purchasing much needed items that are not in the library’s budget and by funding a number of programs. One example of the Friends’ support can be found in the gingerbread house programs mentioned above, as well as many summer programs for children. Through the financial support of the Friends, the Blanding is able to offer a variety of programs for free to local children and adults, a great resource to the community.

The annual dues for belonging to the Friends are: $10 per household. Contributing membership is $25 and sponsoring membership is $50. Monetary donations are always appreciated. Used books in good condition may be donated to the library anytime the library is open. Just ask at the front desk. The Friends mailing address is: PO Box 464, Rehoboth, MA 02769.

The Blanding Public Library (www.blandinglibrary.net) is located in Goff Hall, 124 Bay State Rd., (phone: 508-252-4236). It is open Monday through Thursday from 10 until 8, and on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 4. Closed Sundays and holidays. The library will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 and be closed on Dec. 25 and on Jan. 1 for the holidays. Happy Holidays!
