Posted

East Providence, RI – On April 13th, ninety-one Bay View Academy Upper School students were honored for academic excellence in the subjects of Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science, through the induction into four national honor societies: Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, Excalibur National Honor Society for Excellence in Science, the Catherine McAuley Chapter of the National English Honor Society and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society through the National Council for the Social Studies. These honor societies exist at Bay View in addition to the Academy's chapter of the National Honor Society.

The following information describes the history of each society at Bay View, as well as criteria for membership:

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), an organization sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society for four-year colleges, recognizes the academic accomplishments of America’s high school students and promotes their continuing interest in the English language arts. The Catherine McAuley Chapter of the NEHS at Bay View, established in 2009, was the first such chapter in Rhode Island. Qualification for membership includes maintaining an average of A- (B+ for AP English Language and Composition) or above in sophomore and junior English courses and a good academic standing with no grade lower than a C in any other discipline. Students who have won regional and/or national writing contests but do not have the required average are also considered for membership. Members should demonstrate a passion for reading as well as an enthusiastic engagement with literature, and a high level of skill in writing. Participation in the Ladies Literary League, Zoë Literary Magazine, or the school newspaper is highly encouraged. This organization is open to seniors who meet the rigorous criteria.

Mu Alpha Theta (ΜΑΘ) is the United States mathematics honor society for high schools and two-year colleges. Its main goals are to inspire keen interest in mathematics, develop strong scholarship in the subject, and promote the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. The Bay View Chapter of MAT was established in the 2010-2011 academic year. Qualification for membership includes completion of two years of honors level math with a minimum average of 90; maintaining a minimum average of 90 for each semester; the recommendation of the Math Department; good academic standing with no grade below 75 in any subject. Participation in at least one of the following service opportunities each year is highly encouraged: assisting in the math lab as a tutor, maintaining the math bulletin board, or assisting peers in math classes.

Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. Rho Kappa provides national recognition and opportunities for exploration in the social studies. The Bay View Chapter of Rho Kappa is newly established in this 2014-2015 academic year. Qualifications for membership include: completion of four semesters of history and social studies; a grade point average of 4.0 in history and social studies or 3.5 in Advanced Placement history or social studies courses; and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.75. Once accepted into Rho Kappa, members must maintain a 4.0 (3.5 AP) average in history or social science courses as well as provide evidence of community service and participate in chapter meetings and activities.

Excalibur is the only national honor society devoted to students who excel in the sciences. Its purpose is to foster excellence in the study of science, the pursuit of knowledge, and the advancement of the world through technology and research. Members not only excel in science personally but also strive to motivate their peers to appreciate science and demonstrate a willingness to share their knowledge and love of science. Excalibur was established at Bay View in the 1999-2000 academic year. Qualifications for membership include being enrolled in at least one full-year science course in the current academic year and all previous high school years; demonstrated proficiency in science by maintaining a minimum grade of A- in her science classes; and successful completion of an independent science project at the high school level. Upon being accepted into the Bay View Chapter of Excalibur, members are expected to demonstrate their commitment to the study of science by continuing to enroll in science courses, by maintaining a high academic average, by attending chapter meetings, and by participating in chapter activities.
