ASRI August 2016 Programs and Events for Children and Families

(July 8, 2016) – Bring the brood and get a little wet searching the wetlands for frogs and turtles or head into the meadow to look for butterflies, insects, toads and more! Audubon is full of family-friendly outdoor adventures in August, so come join the fun!

Saturdays in August Saturday Morning at the Build-It Table
Bristol, RI 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Stop in every Saturday morning this summer for our Build-It Table! We’ll have different recycled materials for you to build with—design a cardboard race car, create a water bottle castle, construct a bubble wrap jet pack… your imagination is the limit! August 4, 2016 Wading into Wetlands
Bristol, RI 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Take a journey to the wetlands and discover just how important this local habitat is. Keep your eyes open for turtles, frogs, and ducks! We’ll explore the water with nets and basins, and then use magnifying glasses and guidebooks to identify what we find. Will it be a tadpole? A dragon fly nymph? Snail eggs? August 6, 2016 Summer Meadow
Two Locations
Smithfield, RI and Seekonk, MA 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Frolic and explore in the meadow on a lazy summer's day. Nets, magnifiers and other fun exploration tools will be available. Look for butterflies, insects, birds, toads and other critters. Wear a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and lightweight long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes.

August 6, 2016 Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day
Bristol, RI 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Admission to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Environmental Education Center will be free on the first Saturday of every month, courtesy of a grant from Citizens Bank.

Families can explore environmental exhibits representing Rhode Island’s diverse habitats, from upland meadow and cornfields to wetlands, salt marshes and the Narragansett Bay shoreline.
Situated on the beautiful 28-acre McIntosh Wildlife Refuge, visitors can also walk the nature trails on this breathtaking wildlife refuge that end with a stunning view of Narragansett Bay.

Summer Science
Join Audubon for a whole day of summer-themed science! Make “fireworks” using ingredients from the kitchen, discover why it is easier to float in the ocean than in a pool, and more! Programs and admission are free thanks to Citizens Bank.

August 9, 2016 Guided Plant Walk for Families
Bristol, RI 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Bring the kids and head outside to learn about the many plants found on the Audubon Claire D. Macintosh wildlife refuge. We’ll be following our nature path through the meadow, forest, and wetlands. Who makes a meal of milkweed? What are those vines climbing up the trees? Keep your eyes out for animals—we’re sure to see some! Come dressed for the outdoors. Please register in advance. Program is weather-dependent. August 13, 27, 2016 FREE Guided Trail Walks
Bristol, RI 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Join an Audubon naturalist for a leisurely walk along our trails down to Narragansett Bay. Stop to observe wildlife if the field, wetland and forest habitats. Osprey, frogs, turtles - you never know what might be seen! Bring your binoculars and camera. Program is weather dependent, no registration is required. August 20, 2016 Birding And Breakfast Aboard the Explorer
Pawtucket, RI 8:30 – 9:45 am
Join Audubon aboard the riverboat, Explorer, for a morning river cruise exploring the beauty of the Seekonk and Providence Rivers. Sip coffee and juice and sample baked goodies as we search for wildlife in the along the river. Eagles, osprey and herons, waterfalls and river history will be on the menu for this special program. Participants may wish to bring binoculars. The Explorer is a covered boat and runs rain or shine. Co-sponsored by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island and the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. Departs from Festival Pier, 100 Tim Healey Way, Pawtucket, RI. August 21, 2016 Bird Banding
Bristol, RI 9:15 – 11:15 am
Join Audubon for a bird banding demonstration on the grounds of the Environmental Education Center. Bird banding provides scientists with valuable information on bird migration, life span and habitat use. Experts will demonstrate how birds are captured, measured, banded and released. The life history and migratory habits of each species will be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera and binoculars. Programs are limited to 15 participants, so please register early.

August 25, 2016 Junior Naturalists for Home-schooled Families
Bristol, RI 10:00-11:30 am
Join other home-schooled kids to learn about nature and science! This hour-long program will introduce participants to a different topic each class, with hands-on experiments and nature-based activities that are sure to foster a love of the natural world. Classes are limited to 15 children, so please register early. Adult must attend with child.

August 27, 2016 Eco-stories and Art
 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Bring a snack and relax while an Audubon naturalist reads a nature story. Then create a unique work of art from different recyclable materials and found objects. Will it be a bouquet of flowers made from plastic bottles? A bird’s nest made from scrap paper and yarn? Join us and find out! No registration required.
