Rehoboth Garden Club News

"All gardeners know that in some way they work out their problems in the garden." - Marilyn Barrett

May was a very busy month for the Rehoboth Garden Club. On May 2nd members gathered for the annual clean up of the herb garden at the Carpenter Museum, followed by a very special ceremony.

Two Garden Club past Presidents were honored with memorial stones set into the herb garden. Gertrude Gorab Grimley was President from 1957-1959. Kathryn Blake presided from 1961-1963. Thanks to their generous bequests, the herb garden was renovated in 2007. Member Susan Gerbi McIlwain led the dedication. Several members of the Gorab Grimley and Blake families and guests spoke, then enjoyed a picnic lunch with the members of the club.

Our annual plant sale, which was held on May 14th, was a huge success thanks to the hard work of member Bonnie Kelley, her committee and club members. Special thanks to everyone who purchased plants. All proceeds benefit our scholarship, civic and educational programs.

On June 9, 2016 we will visit the Blue Garden in Newport, Rhode Island. Members who have signed up for the trip will be sent time and carpool information.

We are very proud that the gardens of two of our members were chosen to be part of the Garden Conservancy Open Day Program. The goal of the Garden Conservancy is to introduce the public to gardening by providing access to outstanding examples of landscape design and horticultural practice.
Marj and Don DeAngelis of 134 Hillside Drive, Rehoboth have recently renovated and replanted a fenced in garden surrounding a pool and patio, with broad views of nearby fields. The young garden features a new fence and stone wall, ornamental grasses and annuals.
Susan and James McIlwain's garden at 37 Medalist Drive in Rehoboth abuts a golf course, and provides expansive views in the English landscape tradition. Optimal plantings have been chosen for the ecosystems that range from rocky areas with dry soil to windy sites with wet soil.
Both gardens will be open on June 11, 2016 from 9 AM to 4 PM. An entrance fee of $7 each supports the Garden Conservancy and it's programs. For more information go to www. gardenconservancy.org.

Our annual potluck party for members and spouses will take place on June 12, 2016. Remember to bring a plant to swap.

New members are always welcome. For club information please contact Dianne Burns at dburns54@comcast.net or 508-336-9933.

Happy Gardening!
