The Pinecroft School Brings New Life to Old School

The Pinecroft School has re-located to the former North Rehoboth School at 133 Tremont Street, Rehoboth. After months of renovations, the school opened its doors to a spacious, updated building which includes an auditorium/gymnasium.

An Open House will be held March 3rd, from 10am – 4pm for all to attend and see how the building has been brought back to life.

Pinecroft is a non-profit, independent elementary school established in 1982 with a mission of offering a challenging curriculum and intensive individual attention in an atmosphere of respect, warmth and excitement. Children are taught and encouraged to be self-directed learners, and to adhere to the school’s motto: Respect yourself ~ Respect Others ~ Respect Property. From the first day of kindergarten through fifth-grade graduation, we work on educating the whole child and creating an environment of mutual respect among students, teachers, families and our community. In the spring, plans are underway for Pinecroft to host a birthday party, bringing together alumni and current families to celebrate 30 years of excellence in education.

Pinecroft consists of three combined-grade classrooms: K/1, 2/3 and 4/5. In our multi-age classrooms, younger students learn from older ones as well as from the teacher, and older students benefit greatly from acting as mentors to the younger ones. Beginning in grade one, an individualized “plan” of work is created weekly for each child, allowing children to work independently when not engaged in cooperative or whole-group work. Students work at their own pace with plenty of opportunity to actively explore individual interests. They become resourceful, self-reliant thinkers who work cooperatively with schoolmates. Our child-centered curriculum allows students to formulate ideas and answers in a place where achievement is measured by personal success and advancement. Pinecroft students develop skills that nurture a lifelong passion for learning.

Mornings at the school are structured around small-group lessons in mathematics, language arts and Spanish; afternoons bring science, social studies, current events, and more. Strong weekly art and music programs nurture creativity and provide for creative expression. Children participate in biannual student art exhibitions and become accomplished recorder players, reading music and playing complex pieces. All students perform in our Winter and Spring Programs which also feature singing and dramatic presentations.

Children in the K/1 classroom “buddy” with Pinecroft Pals in grades four and five. All grades play together outside on the playground twice per day, where children explore their world through child-initiated play in the active presence of teachers. Structured physical education classes are taught weekly by trained staff from the Attleboro YMCA.

Throughout the year, opportunities abound for integrated, experiential learning and enrichment through guest speakers and stimulating field trips. Pinecroft’s active parent group works closely with the staff to help make many of these enrichment activities possible. Pinecroft has enjoyed a long and strong affiliation with nearby Wheaton College. College students intern in our classrooms, afterschool and art programs. Future teachers observe and do coursework here.

In our popular Pinecroft Plus after-school drop-in program, children have an opportunity to play outside, work on homework, enjoy a healthy snack, make crafts, and participate in “theme” days, Lego League and much more. Pinecroft holds vacation and summer camps and is home to The Creative Institute for Summer Learning’s art camp, Journey Through the Rainbow World.

Pinecroft strictly limits enrollment in order to offer a very low student-teacher ratio, ensuring that our teachers connect with every child every day. Pinecroft is a kept purposely small to best provide for the individual needs of each student and to enable the staff to deliver the kind of attention that allows teachers to understand and adapt to each child’s style of learning.

Pinecroft currently draws families looking for an individualized approach to learning from many area towns including, Attleboro, Bridgewater, Walpole, Mansfield, Easton, Middleboro, North Attleboro, Norton, Rehoboth, Providence, Taunton, Wrentham, Plainville, Foxboro, and New Bedford. Our graduates become well-organized, independent thinkers who flourish in both public and private schools in the area, including Moses Brown, Lincoln, Thayer Academy, Wheeler, Gordon, Providence Country Day School, Northbrook Academy and more.

Pinecroft accepts applications throughout the year, although most placements are made in February for the upcoming school year.

To truly experience our supportive and stimulating environment, we encourage you to schedule a visit and see for yourself the benefits of choosing Pinecroft for your child’s elementary school experience. Pinecroft is currently accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year and has limited openings for the spring semester of this year.
