February School Vacation Events Offered at Three Locations

(January 14, 2021) – Don't know what to do with the family during the school vacation break? Audubon is the solution! Meet owls, hawks, and reptiles or pull on your warm and wooly mittens for nature explorations on the trails! All programs are designed with safety in mind. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

February School Vacation Week with Audubon
at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium
February 15, 16, 17, 16, 18, 2021; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Special programs and activities are available each day and are free with admission. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Register in advance for special programs noted below as space may be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Nature Stories will be offered each day at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 pm, as well as an animal interview at 1:30 pm. Nature crafts will be available daily for children to take home.

The following special programs for children are available each day at 11:00 am. These programs are recommended for children ages 6+ and registration is required, as space is limited.
Monday, February 15: All About Owls – Learn all about these fascinating birds, from how they hunt at night to which species live in Rhode Island.
Tuesday, February 16: Senses in Nature – Come see how many of your senses you can use to discover more about nature. Come dressed for an outdoor walk!
Wednesday, February 17: Animal Transformers – You may already know how caterpillars turn into butterflies, but come discover which other creatures go through amazing transformations in their lives!
Thursday, February 18: Rad Rhody – Come lend a hand (literally!) to help make a map of our beautiful state by finding and marking your town on our map. Whether you’ve lived in Rhode Island your entire life or are new to the area, you’re sure to learn something about our beautiful state.
Friday, February 19: Light and Color – Create bubbles and crazy colors with experiments that will test sensory abilities. What happens when colors mix with salt water, milk, or oil? How does color affect animals in nature? Come find out!

Sea Glass for Kids
February 16, 2021; 2:00-3:00 pm
Kids design and create a beautiful pendant with sea glass found on local beaches. Learn how to choose the right piece of glass and transform it using easy wire wrapping techniques. Program includes all materials. Find something special on the beach? Bring that too! Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required as space is strictly limited to 8 participants. Adult must accompany child.

Animal Clothes
February 16, 2021; 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Do animals wear clothes? Should they? Discover how animals protect themselves from the elements and survive the seasons. Touch some fur, feathers and scales and meet some live animals. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Rockin' Reptiles!
February 16, 2021; 2:00 – 3:30 pm
Rhode Island has a lot of amazing reptiles. Come learn about local reptiles and their habitats. Meet some live reptiles up close. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Frederick (Story and Walk)
February 17, 2021; 11:00 – 12:00 pm
Little Frederick was not like the other mice. As they worked hard to prepare for winter, Frederick seemed to be in his own world. But in the deepest days of winter, Frederick has a special surprise for his little family. Enjoy a story and a short walk on the trails to look for signs of furry animals. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Build Your Own Bird House
February 17, 2021; 2:00-3:30 pm
Help bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds survive by providing them with a sturdy nesting box to use. Participants will learn about bluebirds and other cavity nesters, when and where to place the nest box, and how to care for it. Each adult/child pair will get one kit to complete. Additional kits may be purchased for $20 each. All building materials are provided in each kit, but participants should bring a hammer and safety glasses for each builder. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Fred's TV (Storytime and Make A Bird Feeder)
February 18, 2021; 11:00 am-12:00 pm
Fred is so frustrated when his TV breaks, but in the days following, he discovers some amazing things are happening in his yard. After the story, make a bird feeder to take home. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Raptor Encounter
February 18, 2021; 2:00 - 3:30 pm
Join a live raptor meet and greet with an owl and a hawk. Compare a diurnal (daytime) hawk and a nocturnal (night time) owl. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Feed the Snowman!
February 19, 2021; 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Come hear the award-winning story "Stranger in the Woods" and then embark on an adventure to build a snow person and decorate it with fruits, nuts and other wild foods to attract wildlife. If there is no snow we will decorate the bushes and trees instead. Peanuts and tree nuts will be in use for this class. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Family Winter Walk
February 19, 2021; 2:00-3:00 pm
Bundle up and join Audubon for a wild and wooly winter walk. Look for animal tracks and signs of the season on this easy seasonal hike. Please wear warm shoes/boots, warm gloves/mittens and hat, this is an outdoor program. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Ecology of a Woodpile
February 16, 2021; 1:00-2:30 pm
Explore the living communities below the woodpiles, fallen trees, dead leaves and rocks that operate like larger eco-systems. This outdoor program is appropriate for all ages, but participants should dress warmly to explore outside in cold weather. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

Nests and Dens: Animal Homes
February 18, 2021; 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Take a mid-morning hike to search for homes created by animals in forests and fields. The bare trees and winter wind-blown land often reveal the past season’s shelters and hidden havens. Search for bird and insect nests as well as dens of active animals. This outdoor program is appropriate for all ages, but participants should dress warmly to explore outside in cold weather. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring binoculars if you have them. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.
