Go ahead and get a little muddy and wet as you explore life in a pond, head out on a cottontail scavenger hunt, search for camouflaged eggs and more! Remember that Audubon has tons of hands-on nature fun during April School Vacation Week. Get those kids outside and have some fun!

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day
Flowers and Soil
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI

Thanks to the Citizens Bank, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join us for crafts, nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. No need to register!
April 6, 2019: Flowers and Soil

Audubon Camouflaged Egg Hunt
Four Locations Offered – See Below
April 13, 2019; Check-in 9:30 am, Egg Hunt 10:00 – 11:00 am

Audubon offers a fun alternative to the same old Easter Egg Hunt! Children, ages 3 to 10, hunt for brown eggs in a natural setting and quickly learn how well the eggs camouflage. Prizes are awarded to all children, with grand prizes given to the finders of the “golden eggs.” Please bring a basket. Check-in will begin at 9:30 am. The Egg Hunt will start promptly at 10:00 am and is held rain or shine. Advance registration is required.

Cottontail Scavenger Hunt

April 16, 2019; 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Following a brief introduction to cottontail rabbits - learn where they live, identify their tracks and discover what they eat - families will set off across the refuge trails to find clues hinting at the presence of these charming creatures. Bring a digital camera or cell phone camera to document your findings and receive a prize. No experience is necessary to have a great time! Prizes will be awarded based on the number of clues found and photographed.

April School Vacation Week

Don't know what to do with the family during April school vacation break? Audubon is the solution! Join us for spring fun for all ages. Special programs and activities are available each day and are free with admission. Registration is not required.

Nature crafts will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day, as well as a Nature Story at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30pm and an animal interview at 1:30pm. Special programs for children are also available each day at 11:00 am. Special programs are recommended for children ages 6+.

Monday 15, 2019: Welcome Spring! Start off your week with some fresh air and colorful art for the fridge.
Tuesday 16, 2019: Buzzing Bees – Bees are essential to our ecosystem’s health. Come find out if you have what it takes to bee one of them!
Wednesday 17, 2019: Bird Beaks – Ever wonder how different birds eat such a variety of foods? Join Audubon to try out different “beaks” for yourself and see what you can catch!
Thursday 18, 2019: Earth Day Celebration – Celebrate our planet by learning how to keep it healthy with recycling games and challenges!
Friday 19, 2019: Forest & Fairies – Find a little magic in the Audubon forest and build your own fairy house.

Two Toad Tales

Come hear two transformative tales about the "lowly" toad. In one, Toad is first viewed as vile and gross, but, in the end, his adaptations save his life. In the other, all the toads are bewitched in a hilarious fantasy that happens one Tuesday night. After our tales, meet a live giant marine toad and learn all about these amazing amphibians.

Fred is frustrated when his TV breaks, but in the days following, he discovers some amazing things are happening in his yard! After the story, make a bird feeder to take home.

City Hawk: the Story of Pale Male
New York City is known for its skyscrapers, subways, and hustle and bustle -- not for its wildlife. So everyone is surprised when a red-tailed hawk is spotted flying over Fifth Avenue, and even more surprised when he decides to settle down on the ledge of one of the Big Apple's swankiest apartment buildings. Listen to his story as he builds his nest, finds a mate, and teaches his little hawk babies to fly. After the story, meet a live red tailed hawk.

Pond Exploration
You may know that frogs, ducks and turtles live near ponds, but have you ever looked for the small creatures that live in the mud and skate across the water surface? Using nets and magnifiers, check out pond plants and animals that often elude the naked eye. Come dressed for mud and water.

It's school vacation week, and what better way to spend it than by exploring the awesome nature trails and shorelines on Prudence Island. Bring the kids and look for all kinds of cool critters in the forest, along the streams and on the beach.

Preschool Adventures

Nature will come alive for children ages 3-5. Children will participate in games, hikes, crafts, songs, hands-on activities and more as they are introduced to the wonders of nature. Space is limited to 12 children so please register early. Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes. Younger siblings are not permitted to attend.

Junior Naturalists for Home-schooled Families

Home-schooled children learn about nature and science at Audubon. This program will introduce participants to a different topic each class, with hands-on experiments and nature-based activities that are sure to foster a love of the natural world. Classes are limited to 15 children, so please register early. Adult must attend with child.
