(July 6, 2017) – Kids love critters…so bring them to Audubon to learn about marine life at the rocky shore or to search for butterflies, grasshoppers, birds and more. Summer fun begins with Audubon!

Build-it Table

Summer Weekends in August; 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Stop in to the Audubon Environmental Education Center on weekends this summer for our Build-it Table. Various recycled materials will be available to build with—design a cardboard race car, create a water bottle castle, construct a bubble wrap jet pack… your imagination is the limit! No registration needed.

Summer at Mays
Audubon Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge, Coventry, RI

There is always something to find in nature at the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge. Come explore the summer fields and forests for wildflowers, butterflies and birds. Dress appropriately with sturdy shoes and bring water and a snack.

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

We love pollinators! Learn all about our local pollinators, search for monarch eggs and caterpillars in the meadow, learn to identify insects, and more! Programs and admission are free thanks to Citizens Bank.
9:00 am - 5:00 pm: Spot the Bee. Can you find all 10 honeybees hiding in our exhibit hall? Spot all 10 and get a prize to take home.
10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Pollinator Craft Table
10:00 am - 2:00 pm: Insect Biofact Table. Stop by the biofact table to investigate insect chrysalises, hives, and specimens.
10:00 am: Butterfly and Bee Stories

Early Morning Breakfast and Birding River Cruise
Departs from Pawtucket, RI
August 5, 2017; 8:00 – 9:00 am
Join us for a morning river cruise exploring the spring beauty of the Seekonk River. Sip coffee and juice and enjoy delicious baked goodies as we search for wildlife along the river. Participants may wish to bring sunscreen and binoculars. The Explorer is a covered boat and runs rain or shine. For children ages 7+. Co-sponsored with the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

Tidepool Trek

Want to bring the family to the beach but don’t feel like dealing with the crowds? Take a trek to the shore for a different kind of outing. Discover firsthand the amazing life along the rocky beach of Narragansett Bay. Use nets and magnifying glasses to investigate the species that call the tidal zone home. Please dress appropriately and wear shoes that can get wet. Program is weather dependent. Adults must accompany children. Registration is required.

Guided Trail Walks with Audubon

Join an Audubon naturalist for a leisurely walk along the trails to the coast of Narragansett Bay. Observe wildlife in field, wetland and forest habitats. We never know what we may see. Bring binoculars and a camera. This program is weather dependent.

Fairy Beach Houses

Even fairies need a day at the beach! Use natural materials to create a vacation home for magical friends. Add sand, shells, seaweed and more. Fairy homes are great for creative play or display. Adults must accompany children. Registration is required.

Bird Banding with Audubon

Join Audubon and witness bird banding, where experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to record their movements. Birds will be gently removed from tall “mist nets” set in Audubon’s shrubby habitats. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed. Bring a camera and binoculars.

Junior Naturalists for Home-schooled Families

Audubon's popular home-school program now has extended class time! That means more time for outdoor exploration, so come dressed for the weather. Join other home-schooled kids to learn about nature and science. This program will introduce participants to a different topic each class, with hands-on experiments and nature-based activities that are sure to foster a love of the natural world. Audubon Insect Investigation

Join an Audubon naturalist and search for six-legged friends! Try your hand at using a net to comb the edge of the meadow, catching grasshoppers, milkweed bugs, butterflies and more. We will observe insects in bug boxes, use magnifying glasses and field guides to identify them and take a peek at some of our awesome insect biofacts! Come dressed in sturdy shoes, long pants, hats, and wear sunscreen. Adults must accompany children. Program is weather dependent.
