(March 6, 2020) – Go ahead and get a little muddy as you search for life in a pond, make fairy houses on a forest foray and explore Prudence Island! Audubon hosts the annual Camouflaged Egg Hunt and offers tons of hands-on fun during April School Vacation Week. Get those kids outside and have some fun!

Audubon offers a fun alternative to the same old Easter Egg Hunt! Children, ages 3 to 10, hunt for brown eggs in a natural setting and quickly learn how well the eggs camouflage. Prizes are awarded to all children, with grand prizes given to the finders of the “golden eggs.” Please bring a basket. Check-in will begin at 9:30 am. The Egg Hunt will start promptly at 10:00 am and is held rain or shine. Advance registration is required.
Fee: $5/member child; $7/non-member child. Ages: 3-10. Register online through the events calendar at asri.org.

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI

Thanks to Citizens Bank, the Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join Audubon for crafts, nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. No need to register!

Spring Walk with Audubon

As spring emerges, it provides a wonderful time of year to explore the Audubon wildlife refuges for amphibians and emerging wildflowers. Join Scott Ruhren, director of conservation, for a ramble through the trails at Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge.

April School Vacation Week

Don't know what to do with the family during the school vacation break? Audubon is the solution! Bring the kids for fun nature activities for all ages. Registration is not required. Nature crafts will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm each day, as well as a nature story at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm and an animal interview at 1:30 pm.

Special programs for children ages 6 and up are available each day at 11:00 am:
Monday April 13, 2020: Senses in Nature – Learn how many senses you can use to discover more about the nature around you.
Tuesday April 14, 2020: Powerful Pollinators – Why are bees and other pollinators so important? How do they impact our everyday life, and how can we help ensure their survival?
Wednesday April 15, 2020: Animal Transformers – You may already know that caterpillars turn into butterflies, but come discover what other creatures go through amazing transformations in their lives!
Thursday April 16, 2020: All About Owls – Learn all about these fascinating birds of prey, from how they hunt at night to which species live here in Rhode Island.
Friday April 17, 2020: Rad Rhody – Whether you’ve lived in Rhode Island your whole life or are new to the area, come learn some amazing things about our beautiful state.

Life Under a Log: A Hunt for Minibeasts
Come to Audubon to romp through the woods! Learn what animals make their homes under the logs and rocks and bark. Dress for dirt and avoid any insect repellent or sunscreen on hands as we will be seeking and touching small creatures.

Drawing in Nature for Families
Bring your favorite young artist, some colored pencils and pad of paper and join Audubon for an afternoon of nature drawing. Take a slow and gentle walk on the trail with stops to sit and sketch the beautiful things found in nature. This program is intended for families with children but everyone who would like to sketch for an afternoon is welcome.

City Hawk: The Story of Pale Male
Everyone is surprised when a Red-tailed Hawk is spotted flying over Fifth Avenue and he decides to settle down on the ledge of one of the Big Apple's swankiest apartment buildings. They name him Pale Male and watch as he builds his nest, finds a mate, and teaches his little hawk babies to fly. Based on a true story, City Hawk brings New York’s favorite hawk to life in a story of family, perseverance, and big-city living. After the story, meet a live Red-tailed Hawk.

Raptors Rock!
Come and meet some real live raptors! No, not like Jurassic Park. These raptors are the modern day equivalents, with sharp talons and curved beaks. These skilled hunters are quite amazing. We will find out what makes a raptor unique and meet a couple of live ones.

Turtles are amazing armored beasts and Rhode Island is home to some pretty cool species. Come learn all about these interesting creatures and meet some live turtles

Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt
How many items can you find and photograph in this scavenger hunt on the wildlife refuge within the time allotted? Easy items are one point. Harder ones are five or ten points. Special prize for the most points, but all participants will get a nature treat bag. Bring your smartphone or a digital camera with a view screen to take photos.

Froggy Fun
Ribbit! Honk! Peep! Frogs are waking up in the spring. Hear a froggy story. Sing a froggy song. Make a froggy craft. Meet a live frog and learn all about these fun creatures.

Pond Exploration with Audubon
You may know that frogs and ducks and turtles live near ponds, but have you ever looked for the small creatures that live in the mud and skate across the water? Come along on this search for ALL the life of a pond. Using nets and magnifiers, check out pond plants and animals that often elude the naked eye. Dress for mud and wet. This program is for adults and children alike.

It's school vacation week! Let’s celebrate Earth Day and explore the awesome nature trails and shorelines on Prudence Island! Bring the kids along as we look for all kinds of cool critters in the forest, along the streams and on the beach, from birds to crabs to salamanders!
