Meet Martin’s New Principal

Posted

Jennifer McKay is the new Principal of Martin Elementary School. McKay grew up in Swansea and attended Bridgewater State University and UMASS Dartmouth for her Masters degree in Elementary Education, then returned to obtain a certificate in educational leadership. “I’ve always felt connected to children,” explains McKay, whose mother was a teacher. “I always appreciated her take on education. I think it’s important to be in a profession where you matter and make a difference.”

Before her arrival in Seekonk, McKay served first as an Assistant Principal and then Principal of Greene Elementary School in Fall River for almost five years. McKay also taught at the school for 10 years. “Because I had been there for so long, Greene was such a big part of me,” McKay noted.  “The staff was always so strong and focused on kids. (Being Principal) during Covid was really eye-opening to me.”

“When you come into Martin, the teachers are incredible, they’re passionate, they’re ready, they were here during the summer working when they didn’t need to be,” McKay continued. “Every classroom is warm and inviting and safe.”

McKay believes trust is one of the most important qualities for a leader: “A big part of my focus stepping into this role was making sure communication was strong. If you’re communicating with your staff and your students and your families the right way, you’re going to establish that trust, that’s important.”
