Seekonk Selectmen Assailed for Charter Changes

Posted

The Seekonk Board of Selectmen were criticized by a town resident for proposed changes to the town’s Home Rule Charter. One such change would allow the board members to have direct supervision over various department heads. “I think it is a very, very, very bad idea,” said Charles Beacham at Wednesday’s selectmen meeting.

“If you do this, you create a situation where each department head has six bosses – the town administrator and the board of selectmen,” Beacham noted.

The board had met with members of the Charter Review Committee on January 8 to review the changes. “We’re going to put in on the agenda in a couple weeks to have the discussion at length,” said chairman David Andrade.

Selectman David Viera believed Beacham was incorrect in his assessment.  Andrade said “it was the vagueness of the language as was written could lead that to interpretation.”

The changes to the charter are not set in stone, according to Andrade.  “Those were recommendations and potential changes (to the charter) that were proposed to the board,” Andrade added.
