Conference Postpones Fall Sports for D-R, Seekonk
SCC pushes all fall sports to February 2021
The South Coast Conference, the league in which Dighton-Rehoboth and Seekonk high schools compete, has postponed its entire slate of fall sports until February due to COVID concerns.
The announement was reported by several media outlets on Wednesday.
The MIAA had previously pushed football, cheerleading and unified sports from its usual fall season to a new "wedge" season in between the winter and spring seasons. The new developments mean other usual fall sports, such as soccer, golf, cross country and field hockey, will now be moved to the "wedge" season in February/March 2021.
High school sports reporter Matt Feld shared the news on Twitter Wednesday, saying that "The SCC stated that the biggest challenge was that half of the conference is set to start remote, and that they didn’t feel comfortable allowing athletics to start before getting kids back in the building."
The earliest D-R and Seekonk students will compete in competitive sports is when the winter season starts in early December. Currently, no announcements or chages have been made regarding the winter season, which includes basketball, hockey and indoor track.
The COVID pandemic has already caused troubles on the high school sports scene. Last season's winter playoffs ended prematurely, and the spring season was cancelled.
Dighton-Rehoboth AD Doug Kelley shared the news on Facebook Wednesday night, telling the D-R community that school leadership recently voted in favor of fall sports competition, adding that D-R was the "first school to take a strong stand in support of athletics for the SCC."
