Martin Middle School vs. Davisville for Boys State Soccer Title - Saturday Noon at Johnston High

We hope that all of Wildcat Nation and EP can come support and cheer us on as we try to be State Champs - Coach "CJ" Januario

It has been over 10 years since the Martin Boys soccer team has won a state championship. Saturday, November 3rd the Wildcats of MMS have a very good chance of bringing home the middle school championship. Martin has reached the quarter finals the last two years. The team finished the regular season with an 8-1 record. The team's only loss was to rival Kickemuit (Bristol-Warren) in a 2-1 game. Martin wouldn't lose again and defeated two-time reigning champion, Davisville 2-1 and took over first place. The Wildcats finished the regular season as number two in the state. Martin takes on Davisville at 12 noon Saturday at Johnston High School.

"We set team goals," said head coach Chris Januario. "Win the eastern division, make the Finals and win the state championship. These boys are like family and the bond they have created in this short season is incredible. We changed our formation and everyone adapted and we've been solid since then. "These boys literally battle for each other every game and every practice, pushing each other more than ever," said coach Januario.

In first round playoff action Martin defeated Chariho 3-1 (goals: Hugo Jesus, Austin Arruda, Martim; assists: Max Collins-2, RJ DeCampos). Martin next defeated Kickemuit in quarter finals 2-0 (goals: Martim Moniz & Drew O’Brein; assists: Max Collins, Nathan Capelo). Martin then defeated Hugh Cole in an exciting 2-0 shutout with goals by Max Collins and RJ DeCampos; Assists by: Hugo Jesus, Andrew Jackson.

"My three captains started holding their own captains practice throughout the summer to get the team fit and on same page before school even started," said Januario. "They want the title badly. They want to leave as champions and are setting the bar very high. All season it was one game at a time, never looking ahead, taking care of business then we celebrate briefly before focusing on next opponent.," added Januario.

"We are excited to have the chance to play Davisville again and not because we beat them already but because they have won the last 3 state titles and to be the best you need to beat the best. They are on an incredible playoff run not allowing any goals in 4 games and just defeated a very strong North Cumberland team by 5-0. We have our work cut out for but we will be ready and will give it our all," Januario told the Reporter Friday.
