Aitken School Opening Delayed

Posted

The opening of Aitken Elementary School has been delayed for two weeks. Seekonk School Superintendent Rich Drolet and Principal John Haidemenos sent a letter to parents on Thursday.

Dear Aitken Elementary School families,

We are writing to inform you that students assigned to Aitken Elementary School will unfortunately, not be able to begin in-person learning until Tuesday, September 29. Please note that all Aitken Elementary students will begin the 2020-2021 school year with fully-remote learning as scheduled on Tuesday, September 15. This two-week delay is caused by unforeseen construction delays associated with the Aitken Elementary School building project. We were hopeful that Aitken students would be able to start the school year in-person on Tuesday, September 15 like the rest of the district, however the final unit ventilators for the remaining classrooms in the original portion of the building were just delivered this week. Following multiple walk-through inspections conducted throughout the afternoon yesterday by the town’s Building Commissioner, our Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, the town's Building Official/Zoning Enforcement Officer and the Seekonk Fire Department, we collectively agreed that more time is needed in order to safely reopen Aitken Elementary School for in-person learning. We apologize for all of the inconveniences that we know this delay in in-person learning will cause families. We wanted to make you aware of this as soon as possible so that you would have time to plan for any anticipated child care needs for the next two (2) weeks. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
