Charles F. McHugh, 92, of Hanover, NH and formerly of East Providence, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at his residence at Wheelock Terrace. He was the husband of Joan E. McHugh to whom he was married for 61 years and who predeceased him by only two days.

Born in Fall River, MA, he was the son of the late Charles F. McHugh and Agnes (Murphy) Fay, both of Bristol. First and foremost, he was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Providence College, and ultimately achieved a M.Ed. in secondary education from Rhode Island College. His professional career spanned from working as a radio announcer and sportscaster in Fall River, MA, an instructor at LaSalle Academy, to ultimately a long career with the State of Rhode Island. His career with the State of Rhode Island included: social work for the Department of Social Welfare, the University of Rhode Island’s College of Continuing Education, Division of Correctional Services, Bureau of Probation and Parole, and at the time of his retirement in 1991 he was the Assistant Director of the Department of Corrections, Field Services. Additionally, he served as Master of Ceremony for the Columban Fathers’ Annual Picnic and Bazaar for over 50 years. He was well loved by all that knew him, and his humorous stories will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. He lived in East Providence with his wife until 2013 when they moved to New Hampshire to be closer to family.

He leaves behind two sons, Charles and his wife Maria Stella of Grantham, NH and Mark of Wichita, KS, and five grandchildren: Liana, Nicholas, Caitlin, Ian, and Sydney. He was the brother of Patricia Doherty of Bristol and the late Robert D. McHugh of Royersford, PA

His funeral will be held on Friday, 25, 2018 at 9:00 AM from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Martha’s Church, Pawtucket Avenue. He will be buried with his wife in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol. Calling hours will be held on Thursday May 24, 2018 from 5-8.
