Martha Elizabeth Wallace, “Aunt Martha”, passed peacefully at the age of 96, surrounded by her family on October 4th.

Born in Rochester, NY, she was a daughter of William Robert James Wallace and Margaret Gleason Wallace.

She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Wallace and sisters, Mary Wetrich, Ann Baker and Margaret “Biggie” Sexton, nephew William Sexton and niece Mary Johnston.

She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, including Tom Sexton, Ann Sexton Telfer, Katherine Sexton Hunt, John Sexton and 26 great nieces and nephews.

After graduating high school, Martha served in the Navy and later in the Air Force.

Upon her honorable discharge, she made her home in Providence to be close to her younger sister’s family and worked as a Secretary in the banking industry. She spent her weekends in Barrington, enjoying the activities of her nieces and nephews. She especially liked the summertime spending time at Barrington Beach and watching family tennis matches.

Martha was an avid letter writer/pen pal, keeping in touch with childhood friends as well as many work friends and relatives over the years. She was famous for her delicious chocolate chip and oatmeal lacey cookies.

She spent her retirement years babysitting for her great nephews and a great niece, Brian Hunt, Jr., Ann Hunt Endicott, Kieran and Denali Sexton. She was an avid fan at all of their soccer and baseball games.

She lived a healthy life and was grateful to have so many people look after her in later years. She leaves many friends at Crescent Park Manor and Orchard View Manor.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 PM in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside, RI 02915. Burial will be private.
