Seekonk Boys Soccer Crushes Wareham for First Win of the Season

WAREHAM - The Warriors exploded for six goals in Monday’s 6-0 shutout of Wareham, but the bad news for the South Coast Conference competition is that Seekonk’s strength is its defense.

“I think we’re going to be really stout defensively,” coach Matt McCartin said after Monday’s victory under cloudy skies on Spillane Field. “We’re built from the back and do a lot of good things in the center midfield.”

Translation: The Warriors have the tools to make some noise in the SCC and beyond.

“We expect to be very competitive,” McCartin said. “I’m really excited for what this team could accomplish. I think we’re a tournament-bound team that could be a force to be reckoned with if we keep building and everyone stays healthy.”

The Warriors rode a balanced attack in Monday’s road victory. Jake Silvestre and August Montgomery scored in the first half as Seekonk led 2-0 at the break. Kevin Moszkowicz, Marco Cozzo, Collin Peterson and Mathieu Dundas tallied goals in the second half as the Warriors cruised to victory.

The six goals could have easily been more as the Warriors peppered the Wareham defense with solid scoring opportunities throughout. Nicholas Lehourites, Jack Santos and Matthew El-Jazzar all had good scoring chances in the second half but saw quality shots miss the mark.

REPORTERTODAY.COM MVPS: Peterson and Silvestre each tallied three points on the afternoon (goal and an assist) to lead the balanced attack.

SAME GUYS, NEW TEAM: The Warriors graduated 14 seniors from last year’s team that went all the way to the Div. 3 South Semifinals, but McCartin said that’s not a reason to think his team will take a step back. “We have a good core of guys, a good nucleus with varsity experience. It’s a good mix of young guys and upper classmen. It’s a fun group to coach.”

OFFENSE FROM DEFENSE: With McCartin praising the team’s defense so far on the season, he pointed to the wings for their solid play in the middle. “Right now, we have August Montgomery and Spencer Deering out on the wings. They’re more offensive-minded, so they create a lot of things to help out our attack.” McCartin also pointed to sophomore Owen Pacheco as being a key cog in the defense. “He was a freshman last year but started on varsity from day one.”

TEAM LEADER: McCartin didn’t mix words when asked about Moszkowicz, who joins Silvestre and Shawn Pichardo as team captains. “He’s as rock solid as any player in the SCC.”

LOOSE ENDS: Also collecting assists for Seekonk were Alejandro Tabares and El-Jazzar. … The Warriors lost the season-opener at Old Rochester 2-0 last week. … Cozza went down with an injury late in the second half and had ice wrapped around his knee after the game but it didn’t appear to be a serious injury that will cause him to miss time. … McCartin said the No. 1 item on the get-better list is the communication. “Last year, guys knew where each other were going to be. Right now, we have to work on our communication; things like calling for the ball and letting others know where you are. We need our midfielders to be field generals.”

UP NEXT: The Warriors (1-1) will host Bourne in the home opener Wednesday before two big matchups next week in GNB Voc-Tech at home on Monday, Sept. 16, and an away game at Apponequet on Wednesday the 18th.
