Seekonk Schools Have a New Look

Posted

Students returning to classes on September 15 will notice some changes to their schools, including fewer desks in classrooms, hand sanitizers in the halls, and directional arrows on the floors pointing them where to go.

The Seekonk School Department has approved a hybrid learning model to allow for social distancing in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19. All schools were closed last spring when coronavirus cases spiked in Massachusetts.

The pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 population will be split into two groups. The first group, Cohort A (last names A-K), will attend school in-person 2 days per week (Tuesday/Wednesday). The second group, Cohort B (last names L-Z), will attend school on Thursdays and Fridays. Mondays will be designated for remote learning.

“We need to have a positive attitude and a growth mindset that we can do this working together,” Superintendent Rich Drolet said at a school committee meeting held last month. “Starting the year in a hybrid model is I firmly believe in the best interest of students.”

At Hurley Middle School, two tents have been set up for outdoor classroom learning.  Plexiglass shielding has been installed in the main office. All students will be required to wear a face covering. Locker use is prohibited.

On July 27, Education Commissioner Jeff Riley announced the start of school would be delayed by 10 days to allow for more educator training. The school year will be reduced to 170 days.

The 75 page Comprehensive Return to School Plan is on the school department’s website: http://www.seekonk.k12.ma.us/
