Tri-County Students Build Oak Podium for Seekonk Police Department

Posted

Seekonk Police Chief Craig A. Mace visited Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School on Thursday, January 22, to pick up an oak podium built by students in the Carpentry Program.

Jake Kelley and Tom O’Donoghue, both of Franklin, and John McCaughey and Daniel Kay, both of Seekonk, worked under the direction of Carpentry instructor Ed McGrath to design and build the podium.

“We are pleased to provide services to our sending towns,” said Vocational Coordinator Jean George. “When our students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to build something that will be displayed and used in their hometowns, it validates why they chose to pursue a vocational technical education.”

Juniors and seniors in the Carpentry program also built a home on Beaver Court in Franklin. The group began the project in April 2014 by building a rough frame and installing a roof and windows. They are currently installing vinyl siding as students in the Electrical Wiring Technology and Plumbing and Hydronic Heating programs continue work in the interior of the house. Construction on the home, built in partnership with the Town of Franklin, is expected to end in June 2015.

Municipal projects give students in Tri-County’s Career Programs valuable hands-on experience in their industry. In addition to printing letterhead and envelopes for several local towns, students in Tri-County’s Graphic Communications Program also print a monthly newsletter for the Town of Franklin. Several Career Programs, such as Culinary Arts and Cosmetology, offer their services to the public at nominal fees. To learn more, visit: www.tri-county.us.
