Community Garden at Hunt's Mills

Posted

"April 10 saw the official opening of the Hunt's Mills Community Gardens. With Laura McNamara, Executive Director of the East Providence Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Bob DaSilva in attendance to oversee the ceremonial ribbon cutting and opening of the gate respectively, the gardeners were for the first time able to enter the first of what is hoped to be several community gardens in the city of East Providence. Pomp and circumstance aside, this was also the day the gardeners got their own keys and the first of several batches of seedlings that were started a few weeks ago below the education center as well as a chance to meet with their fellow gardeners. Although most of these gardeners are residents within a 5-minute walk, there is one garden that serves as an opportunity for the Boys and Girls Club, and another by Girl Scouts; a Three Sisters garden being planted under the auspices of the Sowams Heritage Area. Many thanks are due those in the city, state and federal government and to private sector donors whose assistance made this day possible, as well as to the volunteers who gave much of their time."
