After a weekend in which the Townie Junior Varsity baseball team won four games, including three in a row on Sunday, to win the state JV championship, the varsity squad travelled to Ponagansett Monday and gained a come-from-behind victory. The win put East Providence at 12-4-1 to date. Leading the Townies to the 9-5 win was Tim Robitaille with three hits in three at bats. Robitaille also got the win with two innings of scoreless relief, walking none and striking out three. Robitaille had hits in the first, second and seventh innings. In the first inning Kyler Lorenz walked and Robitaille singled sharply to right field. Nolan Lorenz singled advancing the runners and Kyler Lorenz scored on an Oliver Andrews ground ball out to second base.
Ponagansett got to Dylan Annicelli for three runs in their half of the first after a couple of singles and a ground out to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the second, the Townies tied the game at three. Gavin Palombo singled and Brian Rutkowski walked. Palombo stole second base and with two outs, Robitaille singled on a 3-2 count and Rutkowski and Palombo scored to tie the game.
A sacrifice fly by Jacob Rainey gave Ponaganset the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the second and a walk extended the Ponaganset lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning. East Providence scored a run in the sixth inning. Rutkowski singled on a fly to right and Aidan Martins smashed a double to deep left scoring Rutkowski.
With Robitaille stopping Ponagansett in relief on the mound, the Townies erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Robitaille led off with a single and N. Lorenz then walked. Andrews sacrificed the runners ahead and Colin Roche broke things open with a double to left field, scoring Robitaille and N. Lorenz putting EP ahead 6-5. Palombo was hit by a pitch and then Tyler Dicecco doubled to left scoring Roche. Next Rutkowski singled sharply to left scoring both Dicecco and Palombo as the inning ended with EP ahead 9-5.
Robitaille then ended the game on the mound with a ground out and two strike outs. East Providence had 11 hits in the game. Brian Rutkowski, Colin Roche, and Timothy Robitaille each drove in two runs for the Townies. The Townies turned one double play in the game.
