Wild Edibles Walks In the Woonasquatucket River Watershed

Posted

Providence/Smithfield – On Wednesday, June 2nd and Wednesday June 16th, the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) invites you on two distinct watershed walks to find wild edible plants. These walks are part of the 2021 “Explore the Woonasquatucket” recreational series which offers guided tours of beautiful and historic sites throughout the Woonasquatucket River watershed, with paddle trips, hikes, and bike rides.

On June 2nd at 6:00pm, join the WRWC and Russ Cohen, wild edibles enthusiast and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, on a ramble along a section of the Woonasquatucket Greenway to learn about over a dozen species of edible wild plants. With the industrial history of this land in mind, we’ll steer clear of eating the edibles from this section. This walk will depart from Merino Park in Providence and will be roughly 1.5 – 2 miles – an easy walk.

On June 16th at 6pm, the edible plant search will take place in the northern section of the watershed. This trip will explore the Mowry Conservation Area in Smithfield and the group will traverse up to a great lookout point and then visit the farmers at Revive the Roots, which is a working farm. This hike will include some ups and downs on the trails, so hikers should be sure-footed, wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick if you like.

This series is generously funded by the Cricket Foundation and generous donor support.Visit www.WRWC.ORG/EVENTS to register for this bike ride and to see the full “Explore the Woonasquatucket” recreational series schedule. Advance sign-up is required.
