From the Town Clerk

Posted

October is always a beautiful time of the year in New England. There is a chill in the air, it’s apple and pumpkin picking season. There’s the long Columbus Day weekend, along with fall festivals, football, baseball and of course Halloween to end the month with some fun. I hope everyone can get out enjoy it with family and friends.

Question
I would like to thank everyone who came out to vote. Typically, special elections being held in the summer don’t draw a large crowd so I was pleasantly surprised to see 8.48% turn out. Some people might think that is a small percent but we have had special elections in the summer where only 4% turned out.  A big thanks to our poll workers, registrars, Police Dept., DPW, High School staff and everyone else who helps behind scenes to make our elections run smoothly.

The Fall Town Meeting will be held on Monday, November 8th - 7pm at the Seekonk High School. Hopefully, residents will attend and participate in our important annual Fall town meeting. You must be a registered voter to be able to vote at the meeting. If you are not a registered voter in town and would like to be please go online to: www.registerTOVOTEMA.com . The deadline to register to vote for this meeting is October 19, 2021. If you want to read the warrant before the meeting it will be posted on the town’s website: www.seekonk-ma.gov

On September 23 Lorraine Sorel the Asst. Town Clerk and I went to our first Massachusetts Town Clerk’s Association Fall Conference since 2019.  It was held in Springfield, MA. It was great to see our fellow Mass town clerks in person. We took several classes. One of the classes reviewed new election laws and state elections coming up in 2022. The other class topic was Advanced Vital Records. These conferences are always a great learning tool for the Town Clerk’s office.

Just a friendly reminder taxes are due November 1st.  and the trash bills are due October 20th.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who came out to the 20th Annual 9-11 Remembrance. It was nice to see young and old attend to remember this very solemn event in our nation’s history as well as honor the police officers, firefighters and all first responders who sacrificed so much.

Enjoy October, have a fun and safe Columbus Day and Halloween.
