Turtles, Frogs, and Hawks… and Lots Fun-filled Nature Walks!

- Audubon April School Vacation Programs Offered at Three Locations -

(March 10, 2021) – Join Audubon for springtime fun during April Vacation Week! Kids get up-close with turtles, hawks, and frogs and head outside to explore wetlands, streams and more! All programs are designed with safety in mind. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

April School Vacation Week with Audubon
at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium
April 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 2021; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Special programs and activities are available each day and are free with admission. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Families are invited to attend an animal interview at 1:30 pm. Kids can pick up nature crafts to take home, offered each day between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 pm and nature stories will be featured at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm.

Special programs listed below for children ages 6+ are also available each day at 11:00 am. Space is limited due to COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Monday, April 19, 2021: Binocular Basics for Families - Do you know how to use binoculars? Would you like to learn? Join Audubon for a walk on the trails, look for birds, and learn how to properly use optics. Binoculars will be provided, but bring a pair if you have them.

Tuesday, April 20, 2021: Powerful Pollinators – Why are bees and other pollinators so important? How do they impact our everyday life, and how can we help ensure their survival?

Wednesday, April 21, 2021: Cooking for the Birds - Become a “bird chef” and create unique and tasty dishes for the feathered friends in your backyard! This easy activity puts pantry items to use while helping the birds survive the cold winter season. (Not recommended for those with nut or seed allergies.)

Thursday, April 22, 2021: Wetland Exploration - Take a walk down to the freshwater wetland and discover animals that live there. Who might be awake this time of year? Who might still be sleeping? (Note that participants will not get wet in this program.)

Friday, April 23,2021: Turtle Races – Meet some of Audubon’s turtle ambassadors and learn about their survival skills. Watch them in a race! Who will win?

Life Under a Log
April 20, 2021; 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Come to Audubon to romp through the woods! Learn what animals make their homes under the logs and rocks and bark. Dress for dirt and avoid any insect repellent or sunscreen on hands as we will be seeking and touching small creatures. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Drawing in Nature for Families
April 20, 2021; 2:00-3:30 pm
Bring your favorite young artist, some colored pencils and pad of paper, and join Audubon for an afternoon of nature drawing. Take a slow walk on the trail with stops to sit and sketch the beautiful things found in nature. This program is intended for families with children, but all are welcome. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. In the case of inclement weather, we'll draw some natural objects indoors.

City Hawk: The Story of Pale Male
April 21, 2021; 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
New York City is known for its skyscrapers, subways, and hustle and bustle - not for its wildlife. Everyone is surprised when a Red-tailed Hawk decides to settle down on the ledge of one of the Big Apple's swankiest apartment buildings. They name him Pale Male and watch as he builds his nest, finds a mate, and teaches his little hawk babies to fly. Based on the true story of Pale Male, City Hawk brings New York City's favorite hawk to life in a story of family, perseverance, and big-city living. After the story, meet a live Red-tailed Hawk. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Raptors Rock!
April 21, 2021; 2:00-3:30 pm
Come and meet some real live raptors! No, not like Jurassic Park. These raptor are the modern day equivalents, with their sharp talons and curved beaks. These skilled hunters are quite amazing. We will find out what makes a raptor a raptor and meet a couple of live ones. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Totally Turtles!

Turtles are amazing, armored beasts, and Rhode Island has some pretty cool species. Come learn about these interesting creatures and meet some live turtles. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Earth Day Photo Scavenger Hunt
April 22, 2021; 2:00-4:00 pm
How many scavenger hunt items can you find and photograph out on the refuge within the time allotted? Easy items are one point. Harder ones are five or ten points. Special prize for the most points, but all participants will get a nature treat bag. Bring your smartphone, tablet, or a digital camera with a view screen to take photos with. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Froggy Fun

Ribbit! Honk! Peep! Frogs are waking up in the spring. Hear a froggy story. Sing a froggy song. Make a froggy craft. Meet a live frog, and learn all about these fun creatures. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Build Your Own Bird House
April 23, 2021; 2:00-3:30 pm
You can help bluebirds and other cavity-nesting birds survive in your area by providing them with a nesting box to use. Come learn about bluebirds and other cavity nesters, when and where to place the nest box, and how to care for it. Each child registrant will get one kit to complete. All building materials are provided in each kit, but participants should bring safety glasses for each builder. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.

Aquatic Observations
April 20, 2021; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Take a walk with an Audubon naturalist to the stream and pond at Caratunk to spend some time scooping with nets and searching for life in the water. Nets and other equipment will be provided. Wear appropriate clothing and be prepared to get wet and dirty. This program is designed for school-aged children. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.
