Jose Furtado of East Providence passed away at Rhode Island Hospital on Sunday, January 21, 2024, surrounded by all his loved ones. He was 91 years old. Jose was a communicant of Saint Francis Xavier Church and a member and former board member of the Portuguese American Athletic Club all in East Providence.

Jose was born to Manuel and Angelina Furtado in Ponta Garça, São Miguel, Azores. As a young man, he immigrated to North America, first to Canada, where he was employed by the Canadian National Railroad. While working for the railroad, Jose worked and lived first in Central Canada moving westward while working on several railroad improvement projects and finishing on Prince Rupert Island in BC. Later, he moved to East Providence where he worked at Standard Romper/Healthtex, Central Falls as a production line mechanic. In 1974, he was hired as a carpenter for the City of East Providence, where he worked at a job, he loved for 26 years.

Jose was married to Maria Jose (Soares) Furtado for 48 years before her passing in 2015. He leaves behind two sons, Joseph B Furtado, Jr. of East Providence and Alfred B. Furtado, Stacia (Chmura) Furtado of Pawcatuck, CT, as well as three grandchildren, Jessica L. Foss, Jake B. Furtado, and Alec B. Furtado.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 9:00 A.M. from the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME, 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street. Anne Marie Galvin, 94, of Brook Avenue, Riverside, died peacefully on January 22, 2024 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, surrounded by her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
