Candlelight Re-Reading of the Declaration of Independence

July 4, 2018 at Dighton Community Church

Posted

The Cemetery Walk will organize at 8:30 p.m. The Re-reading will begin at 9:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, July 4, 2018, the Dighton Community Church again welcomes Patrick W. Menges, who will give the Seventh Annual Re-Reading of the Declaration of Independence in that same church, lit only by candles, where it was first read on July 13, 1776, by Reverend Ezra Stiles, just nine days after its adoption by the Second Continental Congress.

Preceding the re-reading, guests may choose to join in the Candlelight Cemetery Walk (weather permitting) through the historic cemetery behind the church. Candles will be provided. Period costumes are welcomed, should you choose to share the historic ambiance.

In keeping with this historic atmosphere, we request no lights or cameras during the re-reading. The event is free of charge. Refreshments afterward in Friendship Hall, next door to the church.
