8 Year-Old Rehoboth Boy Writes Book

Posted

Eight year-old David Green has accomplished something that most folks only dream about – he’s written a book. The book is called “The Brownie Club.” David, with a little help from his father, Chris, is now an author. “The Brownie Club” is about a boy named David who wants to fool his friends on April Fool’s Day with a great joke. His friends enjoy the joke and start fooling other kids and they end up starting a club called the Brownie Club. The story is based on an actual April Fool’s joke that David Green played on his own friends, Jonathan, Gabe and Nathaniel, at Palmer River Elementary School last year. That’s when David came up with the idea for his book. He was just 7 years old at the time. “Gabe had the idea for the club. I had the brownie idea,” David said.

David is now being homeschooled, but he keeps in touch with his friends. The book is dedicated to them, the original, founding members of the Brownie Club. The book includes special pages at the end to help readers try David’s April Fool’s joke on their own. Writing the book was a big project, but it didn’t take very long. David’s family helped him with some of the details. David wrote out all the pages and his dad and mom, Jenn, helped lay out and sequence all the pages. One of the characters is modeled after David’s sister, Abby, 6.

The Greens found an illustrator on the internet and hired him to draw the pictures in the book.  “The whole process took about six weeks,” Chris said. The Greens used Amazon’s self-publishing services to publish “The Brownie Club.” “It didn’t cost David anything. They send him royalty checks when it sells,” Chris said. David was very happy when he saw the published book. “It was awesome,” David said. He was especially excited to give one to his grandmother. “It was the first one I signed,” David said. It was the first book he signed, but it wasn’t the first book he wrote. His first book is entitled “How to Blow Up a Mountain with TNT in Minecraft.” It is mostly a compilation of photographs. “The Brownie Club” is David’s first book with a complete story.

David even had the opportunity to promote his book recently at a reading and book signing at Ugly Dog Books in Attleboro. When he’s not writing, David is interested in Legos and Star Wars and he loves pandas. There are pandas in the book that are just like pandas that David has in his room. David also enjoys swimming, riding bikes, and playing video games.

David’s parents are proud of the work he did on the book. “I’m excited that they’re trying new things and using technology,” Chris said. David doesn’t have any immediate plans to write another book about the Brownie Club. His next book may be about Star Wars or Minecraft or Legos. Whatever the subject, it is very likely that readers will see David Green’s name in print again in the future. The book is available now on amazon.
