Today I Met A Soldier

Posted

Today I met a soldier,
He wasn’t young, it’s true,
But the strong love of our country,
Shone in his eyes of brightest blue,
Like me, he was having a coffee,
But he had a story to tell,
So I ordered up another cup,
And settled back to listen well,
He said he’d been in World War II,
At Normandy, he saw many who fell,
Korea was cold to his very bones,
And Viet Nam, he said, was pure hell,
For him, Iraq was touch and go,
But somehow God helped him through,
Wherever he fought he always saw,
In his mind, vivid red, white and blue,
In Afghanistan he was weary,
And his fellow soldiers were tired too,
But always they knew their mission,
Freedom for me and for you,
He said he was very thankful,
For being a Veteran who always came home,
And when folks stopped to give him a thank you,
Those were the best blessings he’d ever known,
He then got up to leave me,
Gently brushed his hand across my cheek,
Said he was glad that I had listened,
But was gone before I could speak,
So I asked the waitress if I could,
Pay ahead for his next breakfast there,
She said that no one had been with me,
My table was small, just my one, only chair,
Do you think it was my imagination,
How could this story be true?
I think the soldier gave me a message,
That he wanted me to share here with you,
To remind you of the part of his story,
To thank our Veterans and give them their due,
Today I met a soldier,
But, I believe he was an angel...Do you?
