The City of East Providence held its annual holiday tree lighting on the grounds of City Hall to a large festive crowd on December 2, 2023. The event benefitted from perfect weather as a mild chill in the air gave that December holiday feel, while being warm enough for families to enjoy the festivities. A large video screen provided music and a colorful backdrop for several performers. Local dance studios dazzled festival attendees including a group of the RI Witches Guild who danced their eclectic holiday performance on stage. The Witches guild will hold their annual dance/parade in East Providence next year.

The event was much more than lighting the tall Christmas tree on City Hall Plaza. Included was the anticipated arrival by fire truck and police escort of the real Santa Claus. Santa was accompanied by a rather friendly version of the Grinch. After Santa turned on the tree lights to a crowd countdown, he and the Grinch greeted and took photos with children of all ages.

There was plenty to eat and drink with several food trucks and a portion of Grove Avenue blocked off with various craft and treat vendors. “It was an absolutely lovely tree lighting event. Thank you to everyone who made this such a special event for all to enjoy,” said Mayor Bob DaSilva. Also participating throughout the evening were members of the City Council, School Committee, local state legislators, including a visit by Rhode Island’s new Congressman, Gabe Amo. The evening featured no official speeches and focused on families and holiday fun. The stars of the night were truly the wide-eyed children waiting to see Santa and the official city Holiday tree.
