Seekonk Scouts Have Been Busy Over the Last Month

Hiking, backpacking, swimming, and many other adventures.

Seekonk Scouts conducted a swim test and practiced water rescue skills at the Attleboro YMCA. The swim test was in preparation for this summer's annual week at Camp Yawgoog in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. Scouts are required to demonstrate the ability to swim before participating in water-related activities. The scouts practiced assisting and removing a drowning victim, treading water, and swimming laps without rest.

The Scouts participated in a weekend backpacking trip at Camp Yawgoog to practice backpacking, hiking, and camping skills. Scouts spent a weekend backpacking around Camp Yawgoog, carrying their gear and setting up new camp sites. This backpacking trip was to teach basic backpacking skills and prepare for future backpacking adventures.

The Scouts enjoyed a scenic morning hike at Parson's Reserve in Dartmouth, MA. The hike included a stop at the daffodil fields and a vernal pool. During this hike, scouts worked on identifying plants and trees and locating signs of animals in nature.

As part of an Eagle project, a Life Scout led an effort to construct bog bridges along a trail at the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge located at 301 Brown Avenue, Seekonk. The Scouts carried the lumber and materials along the trail and constructed the bog bridges on site. The bog bridges allow visitors to safely enjoy the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge while reducing the overall impact on the environment.

In addition to all the adventures, the Scouts held their regular weekly meetings to learn basic scout skills, plan and coordinate upcoming activities, and work on merit badges and rank requirements. Upcoming adventures include camping and backpacking trips, a bicycle trip, and fundraising activities. Scouts also cleaned out and reorganized the storage shed, which contained all the troop's equipment and supplies.

The scouts held their first car wash fundraiser of the year at First Home Mortgage on Central Avenue in Seekonk. Additionally, car wash fundraisers are tentatively scheduled for May 10, June 7, and June 14 at First Home Mortgage. Follow our Social Media posts for more details. The Troop's fundraising efforts help our Scouts cover the cost of one week at Camp Yawgoog and meet our Troop's equipment needs.

During the school spring break, the scouts took time to relax and enjoy an outdoor movie night featuring Shrek!
