Crossing Guard Needed at Silver Spring

Posted

My daughter attends Silver Spring Elementary and we live on Silver Spring Avenue. I am writing in regards to a crossing guard at Silver Spring Avenue and Progress Avenue, on school days. We've had one there the entire time my family has been attending Silver Spring. This is an incredibly busy intersection. Our crossing guard has been moved to the corner of Silver Spring Avenue at Pawtucket Avenue. We were told that when the construction on Pawtucket Avenue was finished, our crossing guard would be moved back to the elementary school. The adults dropping children off are not paying attention to the Do Not Enter signs. They're not paying attention to the one-way signs and they're not paying attention to the Stop Signs. There's always the last few trying to make it before the bell in the morning that are speeding down our neighborhood streets . A police officer has been sent over two or three times, however, outcome is the same. It is my sincere fear that someone is going to get hit. I've spoken with the police department as have many other parents. We agree that somebody has to be at Silver Spring at Pawtucket Avenue but not nearly as bad as Silver Spring at Progress. Currently Dr. Amodie is the crossing guard. As a principal, I'm sure she's needed elsewhere more importantly.

Mr. Gilmore is a trusted adult and as a mandated reporter he is an asset in my neighborhood. He knows the kids by name. He's the first person they see in the morning and the last they see in the afternoon. He attends the concerts at RMS because those used to be his kids at Silver Spring. We agree that there needs to be a crossing guard at Silver Spring at Pawtucket. But if we were to choose we would like Stubby back at the school and maybe a little police back up until everyone acknowledges the signs.

Thank you,
Erin Bielecki
