Graduation Rain Date

Posted

Seekonk High School Principal William Whalen requested the School Committee add a rain date for the 2024 graduation. Whalen said the ceremony is scheduled for May 31.

Whalen made the decision to delay this year’s ceremony a day due to the threat of thunder and lightning on Friday evening. The weather for the June 3 ceremony was unseasonably cold.

In years past, the graduation was held indoors due to the threat of stormy weather.

If the ceremony had been held in the school gymnasium, each student would have been issued only four tickets. Whalen noted some family members would not have been able to attend the ceremony as a result.

“It would be really really warm inside (the gym) and uncomfortable as well,” Whalen said. “That was understandable to me and I really wanted to make the decision that I thought was best for the Class of 2023.”

The switch to Saturday pleased some and angered others who had plans for that evening, Whalen said. “We apologize for inconveniencing those folks.”
