Townie Football Puts League on Notice – We’re Here!
East Providence High football has put the rest of the state on notice that they feel they can play with anyone. That includes beating up on a Division I always tough South Kingstown 42-7 during a nor’easter storm on Friday nigh September 25th at EPHS. It was the Townies home opener and also their annual Military Appreciation tribute game. East Providence leads Division II with a 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents 107 to 21 so far. The Townies blew out defending D II champion Westerly 44-7 last month. The Rodriguez brothers, Isaac and Xavier, Jordin Heistand and Jaidyn DaSilva accounted for the scoring. East Providence also handled Johnston easily in a 21-7 win earlier.
Friday September 25th was the start of a weekend Nor’easter rain storm, but East Providence and South Kingstown were able to get the game in. “This is one advantage of having a turf stadium,” said Townie Athletic Director Alex Butler. “Most inclement weather days won’t stop us from playing safely.”
Isaac Rodriguez led EP with three rushing touchdowns, opening the game with an early short yardage score and then adding a 10-yard run and finally an impressive 44 yard TD scramble to make the score 35-7 at that point. Drake Silva and Gio Rose both returned interceptions for touchdowns and the Townies never looked back registering a 42-7 win over DI South Kingstown. Silva grabbed the interception and turned it into a 31-yard TD run while Rose ran it in for a 50 yard TD score for his pic-six. Rodriguez led Townie runners with 86 yards on the night followed by Jordan Heistand’s 73 yards rushing.
In the win against Westerly, EP quarterback Rodriguez rushed for four scores. The Townie defense was impressive holding back Westerly to just 7 points while getting three interceptions on the night at Westerly.

EPHS Boys and Girls Cross Country
“In the girls' cross country team Injury Fund meet, they did an incredible job. Facing a very tough course the girls pushed through every mile and ran a fantastic race. A shoutout to our top three finishers Melany Sotomayor, who earned a medal by placing in the overall top 20. She was followed by Abigail Beatrice, then Margaret Thomson,” said EPHS Athletic Director Alex Butler.
The boys and girls teams were defeated last month by LaSalle Academy and Barrington. Top runners for the Townies during the meet were Cormac Moran, Sean Black, Will Budnick, Luca Reposo, and Nate Sanders for the boys. Mel Sotomayor, Abby Raphael, Abigail Beatrice, Aneska Ambroz, and Sophie Olive for the girls. Congratulations to everyone on a good effort.
EPHS Boys Soccer
In the boys soccer team win over South Kingstown 2-1, Nigel Fernandes and Kason Tavares scored goals for the Townies with assists from Emerson Amado and Damian Duarte. East Providence lost a close battle with Chariho in September. “It was a tough one on the road. It was a physical, hard-fought battle from start to finish, with Chariho finding the back of the net with just 2 minutes remaining to hand us a 1-0 loss,” said Head Coach Tim Calouro. “I’m proud of the fight and effort from the boys. We’ll rest up, regroup, and get back to work.”
In a 2-2 tie against Cranston West, East Providence goalie Kayke De Campos hit one from 70 yards for his first goal of the season “and probably the longest goal in EP history,” mused coach Calouro. The Townie goalie also had 11 saves on the day.
Middle School Soccer
Middle school boys and girls soccer is alive and well throughout East Providence. Last month the Reporter stopped in to see most of the Martin vs. Riverside boys game at Martin. Riverside came away with the win and both teams gave their all. Late in September Martin boys defeated favored Gaudet Middle school and to date have a 3-2-1 team record. Martin is in a tie for 2nd place with Riverside in 3rd place with a 3-3 record.
The annual Mayor’s Cup tournament between both middle schools, features the boys and girls teams. The Cup games will be played at East Providence High School on October 8, 2026. The boys will play at 5:00 PM followed by the girls game.
“I look forward to an amazing atmosphere at Townie Stadium at East Providence High School, under the lights with a large crowd,” said Mike Martins, the Martin Wildcat head coach. Mike Resendes coaches the Riverside boys team. Martins’ son Dylan plays for the Riverside team and the two have fun with that. Mike Martins recalls with fondness how he has played school and league sports in East Providence. “I have so many memories there playing on the old fields. I first played soccer on those fields at 7years old and then football for the East Providence Mohawks, then MMS football and of course my 3 years playing for the EPHS football team,” reminisces Martin. “Having my son Dylan play for RMS at the Mayors Cup this year is truly special for me. Martin-Riverside is a special rivalry that dates back many years, especially with football,” adds Coach Martin.
Mike Martins, RMS coach Mike Resendes and EPHS Head Coach Tim Calouro once played competitive soccer under Resendes father. “We were all part of one of East Providence’s first competitive soccer programs in the early 90s called the East Providence Merchants.” On October 8th, they will all be on the soccer field together again for the 2026 Middle School Mayor’s Cup.
