East Providence Girls Tennis D II State Champs
The Townies girls Tennis team capped off an exciting 14-1 season with a Division II state championship over Lincoln High on Saturday October 31st at Slater Park.  The Halloween day match was watched by what many said was one of the larger crowds to watch tennis at nearby Slater Park in Pawtucket.  Townie fans are known to travel in big numbers to support their teams and this Saturday brisk but sunny day was no exception.

Townie tennis under the direction of its head coach Slade Sharma, has been dazzling East Providence with ever improving play through recent years.  Sharma has built a strong program and his team reached consecutive D III championship matches 2022-2023, but came up just short each time.  The improving Townies were moved up to D II and continued to get stronger, adding more players along the way.  After an early season close loss to Lincoln High, East Providence never looked back and finished the season at 14-1.  EP defeated Cumberland 4-0 in D II quarterfinal action and then the defeat of Lincoln 4-0 in a rematch for a semifinal before taking the championship.

Halloween Saturday was the first time in a D II championship and EP was up to the challenge.  With all Townies playing well, the team of Addison Tait and Mazir Baraf nailed the win in their doubles match.  Lincoln showed some rally fever but couldn’t handle the EP duo as the Townies took the title in a 4-0 win.  In singles play EP’s Madison Luu 6-4 and 6-2.  Doubles action saw the Townies Chloe Sullo and Addison Flanagan prevail, 6-4, 6-4.  Talia Gould and Eliana Perez of EP won 6-1, 6-0 and Mazie Baraf and Addison Tait prevailed 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

East Providence has built its tennis program around depth as they replace graduating senior players with incoming players determined to keep the tradition alive.  The Townie senior players were determined to take home the title that they worked so hard for as the program improved and jumped to D II competition.  With returning talent the Townies future remains bright.

In earlier action at the RI Girls Tennis Main Draw Championship, Sydney Olson, Megan Pita, Chloe Sullo and Addison Flanagan participated.  Olson won her first match and dropped her second match but in the process secured an All State bid.  All four team members played vital roles in the team's championship run.
